How to pack a backpack?

In splitboarding expeditions, you’ll be tackling significant elevation gains, and every bit of weight matters. That’s why it’s important to ensure that our backpacks only contain what’s necessary and functional, while also keeping everything within easy reach.

A well-packed backpack is key to a safe and comfortable trip. Here’s a quick guide on what to bring and how to organize it:

1. Avalanche gear (avalanche compartment abc in the backpack)

  • Avalanche beacon – worn on the body, not in the backpack.

  • Probe – stored in the avalanche compartment of the backpack.

  • Shovel – in the avalanche compartment of the backpack.

  • First aid kit – in the avalanche compartment of the backpack.

  • Bivouac tarp for two people – in the avalanche compartment of the backpack.

2. Middle layer of the backpack (heavier items)

  • Thermos with a warm sweet drink (tea, Isostar) 1-2L.

  • Food – quick snack (bars, sandwich, energy gel).

  • Additional layer – light down/windproof jacket.

  • Spare gloves.

  • Crampons and ski skins.

3. Upper part of the backpack (quick access)

  • Goggles/sunglasses – in a soft case.

  • Map/GPS – if you don’t have a track on your watch.

  • Headlamp with spare batteries (power bank).

  • Multitool knife.

4. Hip belt pocket:

  • Ice scraper,

  • Slope angle meter,

  • Compass,

  • Carabiner.

5. External attachment

  • Ice axe – attached to the backpack if the terrain requires it.

  • Splitboard – attached to the backpack when walking uphill.

  • A-frame/diagonal/SB-Fix attachment.

  • Helmet (during the ascent).

Tip:

Pack items in waterproof bags to avoid them getting wet!
